How to connect two computers using a LAN cable in windows

If you want to transfer data between two computers, you need media for transfer data. So there are many ways available for transfer data like pen drives, SD cards, portable hard disks, etc. In this case, one of the effective and fastest ways to data transfer, Connect computers using Ethernet cables. Now you may be thinking about “what kind of cables can I use for this?” well I will explain how to connect LAN cables and How to connect two computers using a LAN cable.

Types of Ethernet LAN cables you can use

Well, in this case, you need to consider your requirement before you buy these cables. Most people have been struggling to select cable categories 5e, 6 and 6a(all of them are explained below).

As has been mentioned, when you decide to buy cable consider factors like connection speed, data transfer speed, and cost.each of cables have different qualities. So let’s take a look at which are the types and differences of Ethernet cables.

Category 3 type (CAT3)

Also known as station wire and not only this type one of the oldest forms of Ethernet cable but also still in use today. To begin with, this is a UTP(unshielded twisted pair) cable that can be able to carry 10 MB data per second. In the early 1990s, this was the popular type of cable for computer networks but came with CAT5 type, CAT3 popularity became down.

But it still can be seen in older 10 BASE-T Ethernet installations and telephones. The maximum possible speed of this cable is 16MHZ.

Category 5

CAT5 or category 5 Ethernet cable is more excellent than CAT 3. It is also UTP cable, but it has higher data transfer speed. It can support 10-100 Mbps range data transfer speeds. A 100 Mbps speed is known as Fast Ethernet. Hence CAT5 cables were the first Fast-Ethernet cables. These cables are used for Ethernet data, telephone signals, and video. These cables superseded CAT 5e cables

Category 5e

CAT 5e means that enhanced edition of CAT 5, which is optimized for unwanted transmission of signals between data channels(crosstalk). This CAT 5e works for 10/100 Mbps transfer speeds and also 1000mbps(1Gbps) speeds, both CAT 5 and CAT 5e have four twisted pairs of wires, but the difference is CAT 5 only utilizes only 2 of these pairs, while CAT 5e uses all 4.as a result CAT 5e cable to enable Gigabyte Ethernet speeds.

CAT 5e has increased bandwidth of 100 MHz compared to cat 5e.CAT 5e cables can be used in any new network installations.

Category 6

The main difference we can identify in  CAT6 and CAT 5e is transmission speed.CAT 6 cables able to handle bandwidth up to 250 MHz with Gigabyte Ethernet speeds.

CAT 6 cables have several improvements, including better suited for environments with a higher electromagnetic interface, better wrapping and thinner wires that give the higher signal to noise ratio. However, CAT 5e used for most applications because it is less expensive than CAT6 and has gigabyte Ethernet speed.

Category 6a

This cable type is the improvement of CAT 6, which can be able to transfer data with 10,000 Mbps speed and 600 MHz bandwidth.CAT 6a type ordinarily available in shielded twisted variety (STP) form.

Category 7

This type of cables are fully shielded and able to support bandwidths up to 600 MHz with 10 Gbps speeds. Category 7 cables consist of an SSTP(shielded twisted pair) wires, and the layers of shielding and insulation contained within them more extensive than CAT 6 cables. Shielded layers of CAT 7 cables must be grounded.

therwise, performance may be reduced than not only CAT 6 but also CAT 5. So it’s essential to know the type of connectors at the ends of a CAT 7 cable.

But for your personal or home usage I suggest you buy CAT 5, CAT 5e or CAT 6 cables because it’s less expensive and easier to use.

How to connect two computers using a LAN cable

To connect two computers using a LAN cable Follow the below steps to connect two pcs.

1. To begin with going to “Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center -> Change Adapter Settings.

2. Click on “Change Adapter Settings.” This window will show you different connections.

Select the appropriate connection for your LAN. Usually, but not necessarily,

the connection will be called Ethernet and have the description Network cable unplugged.

Right-click on the connection and select “Properties.”

The local area’s connection properties window will appear.

3. Under the network tab, select “Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4) ” after a click on “Properties.

In the Properties windows change the subnet masks and IP address of the first computer to:

IP – 192.168.0.5

Subnet Mask – 225.225.225.0

Repeat the above steps for the second computer, and set the subnet mask and IP address as follows:

IP – 192.168.0.6

Subnet Mask – 225.225.225.0

Notice: you will need to be sure that the final values of the IP address for each computer system are completely different.

4. The subsequent step is to attach the crossover cable to the network ports of the two computer systems.
Each end of the network cable look identical, so it doesn’t matter which finish you employ first.
The network ports look one thing, just like the picture below. (note that most new laptops don’t have LAN ports.

5. Right-click on “This PC” and select “Properties.” Click on “Change settings -> Change.”
This window reveals the title of the workgroup and Computer name. The worth for the workgroup title must be identical for each PC.
By default, the workgroup title will probably be WORKGROUP. However, you’ll be able to change it to any title you want.

6. Right-click on the drive you wish to share. Scroll to the “Give access to” choice and click on “Advance Sharring.”
Below the sharing tab, again click on the “Advanced sharing” button.
This task will reveal the advanced sharing window. Verify the “Share this folder” checkbox, and click on “Apply -> OK.”
At this stage, you should have successfully related the 2 Windows computers to share your drives between them.

Transferring Data

Particular folders or data can now be transferred.

To share specific folders or records data from PC 1 (ADMIN-HP) with Laptop 2,right-click on the desired folder or file in PC 1,
scroll to the “Give access to” option and click on “Specific people.”

Choose “Everyone” from the drop-down menu within the file-sharing window. Subsequent, click on “Add” and click on “Share.”

Go to the Network Panel on Laptop B, and you will notice the title of what laptop is a part of the network.
In this case, Laptop 1 is PC1. Double-click on it, and all data shared can be displayed.

At this stage, you need to use the usual copy and paste to move the specified content material.
Within the case of copying data from Laptop 2 to Laptop 1,carry out the same steps,

However, this time the steps beforehand carried out on Laptop A are carried out on Laptop B and vice versa.
